一法ヲ應用ス O Sensei - “Budō”
The first law of Aikido is expressed by two complementary techniques: ikkyo and shiho nage.
A person's entire body can be controlled by the elbow, either in the extension phase of this joint or in its flexion phase.
Ikkyo is control by the elbow in the extension phase.
Shiho nage is control by the elbow in the flexion phase:
Roppo, the displacement of Aikido, displacement in six directions, allows one to respond safely to attacks coming simultaneously from four directions.
At the moment of attack, it is vital to choose one of the six directions and move behind the attackers.
The technique cannot be determined in advance; the technique is a consequence of the chosen direction and depends on it. Tori is not free to use any technique in any situation; he is only free to choose the direction.
This is why it is necessary to know the six possible directions from hanmi; it is absolutely essential to know and understand roppo.
