In Iwama, I saw master Saito at least ten times explain the imbalance of morote dori using a jo. He liked this example because he thought it was particularly revealing. I agree with him that it is, and the video is, in my opinion, sufficiently explicit:
The use of leverage is very important in Aikido and especially in a two- hand hold (morote dori), without which it remains nothing more than a pointless exercise in physical strength.
Master Saito would ritually complete this demonstration with a phrase, always the same: ‘kata mo hiji mo koshi mo kimochi o sagete’, which means ‘lower your shoulders, elbows, hips and feeling’.
I believe that these two teaching elements speak for themselves sufficiently for there to be no need to say any more here.
